Find Federal Inmate Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, use the federal locator only when a Mason County person had a federal custody or sentence history. No BOP institution was identified in Mason County. The locator retains many former-federal-inmate results and may show a release date with Released or Not in BOP Custody status. Those labels concern BOP custody alone. They do not rule out another jail, state custody, immigration detention, or federal supervision after prison.

Federal Releases Serving Mason

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates the federal prison system. It is separate from Mason County Jail, TDCJ, the U.S. Marshals Service, and ICE. No BOP prison was found inside Mason County. A Mason arrest or county sentence does not belong in the BOP locator unless the record shows a separate federal custody event.

A former federal prisoner may appear in the public locator with a release date. That is useful evidence that BOP custody ended. The result does not say that every legal restraint ended. Supervised release may continue, another authority may hold the person, or an immigration process may follow. Match the proposition to the source: BOP can establish BOP status, not universal freedom from custody.

Scope matters: Released or Not in BOP Custody means the Bureau no longer holds the person, not that no other authority does.

Search BOP Former Inmates

Use the official BOP Inmate Locator. An identifier search is strongest. The tool accepts a BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number. A name search allows first, middle, and last name with age, race, and sex filters. The public coverage generally begins in 1982.

  1. Choose identifier search when a register or agency number is known.
  2. Otherwise enter the full name and use only filters supported by the known record.
  3. Compare register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status.
  4. Record the exact status wording and search date.
  5. Check the court or transferring agency if another authority may be involved.

A name-only match is weak when several people share the name. Confirm the federal case, register number, sentencing court, and custody dates before connecting a result to Mason County.

BOP Release Result Fields

The BOP result table presents a small set of fields. Each should be read within the federal system's scope.

Locator fieldMeaning and limit
NameIdentifies the displayed person but needs other fields for a safe match.
Register numberThe best public identifier for linking federal records.
Age, race, sexMatching aids, not complete identity proof.
Release dateThe BOP date shown for exit or expected exit; dates may be recalculated.
Location or statusShows a facility or former-custody label within the BOP system.
Released / Not in BOP CustodyConfirms no current BOP custody, subject to the locator's own warning about other systems.

A projected date may change as sentence calculations or First Step Act credits are updated. An actual former-inmate result is stronger than a projection, but another custodian still must be checked when the case history points elsewhere.

BOP Locator Source View

The official federal locator is documented in the successful manifest image below.

Federal Bureau of Prisons locator for current and former federal inmates

The screen supports identifier and biographical searches. Its result applies to Bureau of Prisons custody. Preserve the register number and release field so a later records request can target the correct person.

The locator is not a Mason County recent-release feed. It does not list local bond-outs, county sentence completions, or people held only by TDCJ or ICE.

Federal Release Versus Supervision

Release from a BOP institution can be followed by federal supervised release. That is a court-imposed period administered outside prison. A locator status saying BOP no longer holds the person does not cancel conditions imposed by the federal judgment. The federal case docket and sentencing papers explain the term, while the locator addresses prison custody.

BOP custody
Confinement under the federal prison system.
Released
A BOP status showing the person is no longer held by the Bureau.
Supervised release
A post-prison federal court term with conditions, separate from BOP confinement.
Transfer
Movement to another authority where custody continues.

If a detainer or transfer is involved, the receiving agency's record becomes necessary. Do not call a move from BOP to ICE, a state prison, or a local jail release to the community.

BOP Records and FOIA

If the locator lacks the needed detail, submit a focused request through the BOP Freedom of Information Act channel. Describe the specific record and include enough identity data and dates to locate it. Useful targets include a custody history, release date, release institution, movement, or other public record tied to the register number.

Records: BOP FOIA
Best identifier: BOP register number

Fees may apply even when the search yields no releasable record. Ask for existing records rather than an explanation the agency would need to create, define a date range, and accept lawful redactions. For older pre-1982 cases, FOIA or archival research may be needed.

Mason to Federal Transfer

A Mason County booking can end through transfer to a federal authority. The local jail transaction should state the destination or receiving agency. That event closes the Mason booking, but it is not a community release. A federal defendant may first be handled through the U.S. Marshals Service before placement in a BOP institution.

When the sheriff reports federal transfer, request the Mason movement entry, cause or case identifiers, and receiving agency. Then search BOP with the federal identifier. If the person never appears in BOP or the event predates locator coverage, a focused U.S. Marshals Service FOIA request may seek prisoner-processing or tracking records for a stated range.

The Mason County release search explains how to preserve the local record before switching to the federal system.

BOP and ICE Are Different

BOP handles federal criminal confinement. ICE operates a civil immigration detention network. A person can leave BOP custody and then enter ICE custody, so a former-inmate result does not decide immigration status. Use ICE's Online Detainee Locator only when the case or destination supports that path.

ICE's public scope is also different. It covers current detainees and, according to ICE, people released from ICE custody within the preceding 60 days. BOP can retain former-federal-inmate results much longer. Neither system is a substitute for the other, and neither is a permanent record of Mason County jail releases.

Federal Record Conflict Checks

When sources conflict, compare scope and update time. A federal court docket may show a sentence or release order while BOP still completes movement. BOP may display a date while another detainer controls what happens next. A Mason record may show transfer without the later federal identifier.

Keep the register number, federal case number, name, date of birth, sentencing court, Mason cause number, and date range together. Ask each source only for the event it maintains. Report uncertainty when the records do not yet establish community release.

Note: No BOP institution in Mason County was identified, so federal confirmation always uses a nationwide system and case-specific records.

BOP Release Date Changes

The BOP warns that release dates can change as sentence computations and First Step Act credits are recalculated. A future date should therefore be labeled as projected, not actual. Court amendments, credit decisions, disciplinary effects, and detainers can change what occurs at the end of the prison term.

When the date passes, rerun the identifier search and preserve the result. If the locator shows Released or Not in BOP Custody, note the displayed release date and then check for another authority or supervised release when the case record suggests either. A dated BOP result is evidence about the Bureau's custody, not every system.

Older Federal Release Records

The public locator's general 1982 starting point leaves older federal custody outside its normal historical reach. Do not turn a no-hit into proof that no federal record exists. Search the federal court file, identify the institution or U.S. Marshals event, and submit a focused records request with the known identity, case, and dates.

For any age of case, a narrow request is more useful than asking for all records. Specify custody history, actual release date, release institution, transfer destination, or another named document. Keep the response with the locator result and court judgment so later readers can see which source supports each part of the timeline.
